But don’t be fooled! This however, was not the case for me couple years ago! Ha! I would be lying to tell you that I am a professional. You see, not so – long ago our house was cluttered with so much stuff, I literally couldn’t breathe! Yes, like you I really wanted to declutter my home and live in a gorgeous pretty organized house. I most certainly didn’t want to feel guilty and make excuses every time we had visitors around. I wanted to feel joy and be proud of our home, I wanted to worry less and run my home smoothly.
But I was struggling.
I couldn’t get myself past this deep dark cave I was in for so long, I didn’t know how I could climb up and pull myself away from the darkness and get to the other side. I was depressed, frustrated and disappointed in myself. I felt like a failure and deeply embarrassed, that I shut the door for others. I didn’t want people to see how I was living, I was in an emotional rut for so long and with desperation I turned to magazines and a quick search on google.
A big mistake!
- Where on earth do I start?
- How do I get started?
- What steps do I need to take first
Somebody help me out please!!
Yep, I was that desperate.
After having so many breaking points and crying my eyes out and say out loud ” What is wrong with me”? I finally sat down and wrote every little thing and big things that was bothering me on a piece of paper.
What is the problem? What is not working? Why is it not working? How can I improve that? What feeling do I want to create or feel when I am in this room? What Do I want? What do I Not want?!
You can read my story right here
If you thought you were the only one who hasn’t got her ”act together” … well, you’re wrong! I know exactly how you are feeling! I know you are frustrated, I know you are sick of it, I know you want to feel proud and invite friends and family.. I KNOW! I hear you loud and clear, friend!
But you know what?! This all can change, You can change! Yes, you can have a home you love and Yes you can declutter your entire home! It’s possible!!! If I can do it, you betcha you can do it too!
My journey has been quite a long journey I wish I took action or figured out earlier. But with all those trials and errors, I am happy to have found a sweet spot to simplify things when it comes to decluttering. However, I do still get in the rut of being overwhelmed and become paralyzed by looking all that clutter. But you know the best part? It doesn’t last long and I take immediate action!
So I want you to stop thinking about your ideas. Put all your frustration to bed and all those decorating ideas back to their boxes (because that’s way down on your list).
I want you to grab a piece of paper and answer this yourself:
- What are my most top 3 important room in our house?
- Which room are we spending most time in?
- What is working and what isn’t working?
Think about the rooms your family most enjoys or spend time in.
For example: This simply could be the living room, the kitchen and the dining room. Take a deep look around and ask yourself:
- What has always been bothering me in this room?
- How can I make it less frustrating ?
- Is there something standing or getting in the way?
- How can I simplify this room to make my everyday life easier?
For example: Our top 3 room are: the living room, the kitchen and the bathroom.
The living room: What has always bugged me about this room is the fact that there is so much clutter that we no longer need or don’t belong in here. What frustrates me is the lack of action on our part and there are clothes lying around. The things that stands in my way is there items that have no place. I can simplify this by setting up new rules for no clothes, no paper clutter and creating a storage or a new home for items.
The kitchen: What has always bugged me about is how messy it becomes real fast. What frustrates me is there is no kitchen zone and how much space clutter takes over on my counter. The things that are standing in my way is there is no system I can work keep up with. I can simplify all this by declutter appliance I no longer need, create a effective kitchen zone that works and more counter space. Also create a system that will help me to stay on top.
Find out how you can make it work for your home and what can you declutter to make your every day life simplified.
Taking an honest assessment about your home on a piece of paper, gives you a visual platform for you to find answers for your home and start decluttering your entire home a lot easier.
4. What room would I like to start first?
I personally always like to start with the living room as that is the main area our family spend most time in. So it needs to be tidy, neat and organized. And if we do get guests, I know the living room is not cluttered, but ready for entertainment. So it’s super important for me to start on that room.
Now that you have decided to what room you would like to start. Set a deadline to how long you can work on a particular room. There is no point to burn yourself and get all frustrated thinking you need to get this done in one day. It is however possible that you could get it done in one day, but that all depends on how much clutter you need to get rid of. ( give it at least three days)
If you are a busy mom who works or has not a lot of time, I would say a week should be enough. Allow yourself to properly declutter a room with an end result you will be proud of.
Decluttering is hard work, and hard work pays off.
In the next following days
You’ll be spending most of your time on decluttering almost everything you own in that room. Throw things aways that are no longer valuable to you or is standing in your way. It is essential to bring a box or a bin bag for thrash – donate and if possible to sell.
During your process, I know most likely you will get to a stage where you will be angry and dissapointed in yourself. That great! Use that energy to get rid of more stuff and getting things done faster. Your main concern is that you want to create a minimum room where you will feel a lot lighter and happier.
Get angry, get stinky mad! And use that energy decluttering your entire home!
whenever I declutter our living room, i make sure i get rid of everything! I keep my bin bags very close to me of thrash – keep and donate. I make the room almost as a blank canvas, that way I can ”start” over and decorate/put things back better.
- and never ever forget about the walls + ceiling.
Now the fun part! Now that you have decluttered and cleaned, it’s time to organize and make it presentable. Don’t worry about the things you don’t have, and work with what you got!
